Installning Docker on Ubuntu 19.10

Ubuntu [server] 19.10 is out and installing Docker isn’t as straight forward as one would hope. First, off the guide at Docker, https://docs.docker.com/install/linux/docker-ce/ubuntu/#install-using-the-repository is kinda correct, I will show you the trick that will make Docker install just fine. The trick is to trick the installer to think that you’re on an older version of Ubuntu than you are… So when you come to the step where you install the repository use this line instead:

Halloween ghosts in my setup

In some part of the world this weekend is the Halloween weekend… not here I live but that is beside the point. Earlier in the week, I saw that my proxmox server had a bunch of updates needed to be applied, so I said ok, in the corner of my eye I saw that the updates contained an update to 6.09, up until now I had been running 6.07. Didn’t think of it much until later this week when I was about to go in and shut the server down, I wasn’t able to reach the gui, all the VMs where up and running.

The autumn plan coming along

The plan for the autumn is closing in. So what is the plan you ask, how nice of you to ask me that. Well it you have read up on my homely setup you know I got a storage server, it is a self built, huge tower that is my main storage for every other server in the lab. So it has to go down quite a lot of thought into the planning of the update of that one.

Planning the setup

Finally the new Unifi USG router arrived at home after being away for RMA, it was replaced with a new one so that was good to hear, that it wasn’t me that was crazy. So now the planning starts how to impact the network as little as possible when I do the switch. As of now I am thinking of configuring it completely before doing the switch and hope that it works.

Living with a 10 year old router

About a week ago my usual rock steady router the USG 3P stopped being rock-solid. A few searches and questions led me to the answer that this is known problem with the ram. Since it wasn’t a year old it was no problem getting it RMA’d. But still… I had to send it to the store, they had to investigate the router and take a decision what to do. No internet during this time, well with three kids, that is not an option.

Four problems and sort off a Funeral

I don’t know where to begin really. You can read up on my homelab here, this is all about my server HP Proliant DL380 G6. A few weeks ago the virtual server I ran, yes ran, Proxmox started to tell me that there were something fishy with the filesystem. I wasn’t able to create new VMs or anything. Then a week or two forward VMs started to crash. I have been waiting for a moment to upgrade the server with memory and an extra CPU.

So my VM with Unifi Controller - died

Suddenly I couldn’t connect to my Unifi controller, checked the VM and it was up. But I was not able to ssh into it, strange, tried to VNC to it through my VM host. It took while but when I finally saw something, the OS, in this case Ubuntu 18.04, had crashed, seriously, crashed hard. Some kind of filesystem error so the OS couldn’t mount the virtual disk. No matter what I did, what guide I followed, it dawned on me that it was doomed.

Traefik, ssh and Visual Studio Code

If it works - fix it. That is how I roll, so after been running the Linuxserver.io most excellent container Letsencrypt for close to a year, it was time to do something else. Before you go any further, if you need a reverse proxy that take minutes to setup, use the Letsencrypt container, it is awesome, and the help you get at their Discord channel is no more than fantastic.

Ikamand got it!

After being contact with both Kamando Joe and Desora (the makers of the iKamand) giving them the link to my blog posts about my troubles, I had a very good communication with both of the companies. I resulted in a bug report that was solved in the update than came along a few weeks ago, I haven’t had the time for any long slow cooks but yesterday I had a chance to make some baby back ribs.

Changing IP on Proxmox 6 with bonds and bridges

I am running Proxmox 6 as my virtualization server, an HP Proliant DL380 G6. It is working just fine, apart from that RAID card… and I still haven’t figured out how use go around it to using ZFS… but that is another discussion. I am restructuring my network to make it more logical and neat. I save the best for last, my VM server. Hardware-wise the server has 4 NIC’s, five to be exact but the last is for ILO.
